Kids Fly Fishing
by Madeleine DiMedio (age 11)
My dad, brother, and I have always love to go fly fishing. Sometimes we would catch fish, other times we wouldn't.
started at a young age. About 6 to 7 years old. That is a very good age to start fly fishing,
maybe even younger (depending on the child.)
You should always stay with a young child when he or she is fly fishing near a lake or river.
Make sure your child can handle a fishing rod without falling over.
Also, make sure your child is comfortable with his or her fly rod.
Tying flies is a lot better than buying them. Flies can be expensive at a store. Flies are very easy to make, especially ants, spiders, and wooly buggers. Different kinds of fish are attracted to different kinds of flies, so you can't always use the same one. Make sure to have the proper tools to make your flies. When your child makes a fly, it may not look right when they make them, but they will still catch fish.
Wading in the water can be a lot of fun to do with a child. But make sure your child can stand in the water. Make sure you have waders and wading boots. You should always look at your surroundings before going in the water because your flies could get stuck on some tree branches. That's not good because then you have to get out of the water an retie a new fly on the rod and help your kids get back in the water. That has happened to me before.
Fly fishing in a canoe is a fun way to fish too! When you have a kid, remember to give them a life preserver in case the canoe tips over. That usually won't happen, but just in case.
Fishing on land is a good way to fish as well. Don't always coach your kids, let them do it themselves. Make sure the line is long enough for your child to catch big fish.
If your child is 16 or over, make sure he or she has a fishing license and make sure it is up to date.
I actually have a favorite spot to fish. I live where there are a lot of places to fish. So it was hard to pick a place.
Well where ever you live it is a lot of fun to fish with your kids!
