Elk Creek

CENTRAL PENNSYLVANIA

Elk Creek originates from a cool limestone spring in Bald Eagle State Forest. With continuous hatches throughout the year, it is one of the few food-rich streams loaded with wild trout. The creek is not stocked, and maintains healthy populations of both wild brown and native brook trout. Most sections of Elk Creek are less than 15 feet wide, and none are over 25. The first mile or so is quite small and slow, as well as silted, causing an intermittent flow that leaves some areas completely dry in midsummer.

It perks up again around Spring Bank, where a limestone spring revives it with a strong flow of cool water. From the confluence with Pine Creek, Elk doubles in width, and long, slow pools produce good fishing.

Flyfishing anglers can experience a tremendous hatch of sulphurs and terrestrial fishing is excellent in the meadow stretches. The best results can be had in overcast weather, using long leaders, a careful approach and thin tippets. No special regulations are enforced on Elk Creek. Nearby streams include Penns Creek and Spring Creek.
