Lackawanna River

EASTERN PENNSYLVANIA

The Lackawanna River rivals the Delaware River as a Pennsylvania trout fishery. If you are looking for big, wild trout, then this river in the Scranton area is a worth a visit. The area is not always the most scenic, and the water may not look that inviting in some places. Area anglers, however, say that wild brown trout flourish. Wild trout fishing is best below Carbondale. Stocked trout are most plentiful from Forest City down through Simpson.

A trophy trout area begins near the Gilmartin bridge in Archibald to the Lackawanna Avenue Bridge in Olyphont. According to the Fish & Boat Commission, the sections before and after the project are productive and hold plenty of large trout. Stream width varies from some stretches reaching 25 feet to others measuring 60 feet in width. Overall, there are good pools and riffles throughout the fishery as well as easy access points and railroad grades running along the river.
