Loyalhanna Creek

WESTERN PENNSYLVANIA

Beautiful Loyalhanna Creek is heavily stocked from Ligonier to Kingston and contains hatchery fish almost exclusively, although you can still find some wild species above Ligonier. Many sections of the creek feature long, shallow riffles, with unexpectedly deep pools nestled behind large boulders. Special regulations on Loyalhanna Creek allow for abundant trout fishing often lasting well into July. During the midsummer, however, the water temperatures rise a bit too high for trout.

The delayed harvest artificial lures only area is the stream's biggest draw, stretching from Route 711 near Ligonier downstream to just above the State Route 2045 bridge. This area is clean flowing and about 50 feet wide until it is joined by Mill Creek, which nearly doubles its volume and adds silt. Loyalhanna Creek is a popular fishery with spinning anglers, bait fishermen and flyfishermen as well. The creek's mix of gravel bottom and limestone provides an enticing flyfishing experience, with caddis as the stream's main hatch. Low to moderate waters can be effectively fished with terrestrial imitations.
