Youghiogheny River - Middle

WESTERN PENNSYLVANIA

This section of the Youghiogheny [yaw-ki-gay-nee] River can run 200-foot-wide and starts from a dam at Confluence, PA to ends at Ohiopyle. It provides excellent trout fishing through the year, including the scorching heat of the summer. This condition is made possible by a dam that has a bottom release that keeps the water cool and friendly to trout. There can be a triple digit heat wave, and the water will remain in the 50s and low 60s.

The Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission stocks fingerling trout, and an all-tackle trophy trout program exists on a 3.5-mile section of the river from just below Confluence downstream to Ohiopyle. Large, wild trout can be found in these ideal waters. The river is big and the water moves fast. Wading requires good shoes and a trusty staff.
